This article examines the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 and its origins, projected impacts, and open research questions. It describes how IRA’s clean energy and climate provisions evolved from earlier proposals. Using results from a range of energy-economic models, the paper summarizes expected emissions, energy system, and macroeconomic outcomes of IRA implementation. The paper also discusses implications for fiscal and resource costs and international competitiveness, highlighting areas where economists can contribute future research, including evaluation of tax credit effectiveness and interactions with other policies and incentives.
