Decarbonization scenarios may have certain shared assumptions and limitations in their design that shape their applications to decision-making. Authors of policy and company strategy often rely on these scenarios in their decision-making process. Understanding these limitations provides context for their application. This study investigated a novel set of U.S. net-zero CO2 emissions scenarios for their variation in the resulting power sector emissions reductions, end-use and power sector technology deployment, and energy efficiency. The study finds variation across scenarios in these attributes, nationally and regionally that may not be reflected in international pledges and third-party guidance for company strategy. These variations expand when comparing with global models that include the United States as well as national models.
