Long Duration Energy Storage: Cost and Performance Assessment of Selected Technologies

This report presents cost and performance estimates for selected mechanical and thermal long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies. Cost projections are based on vendor-supplied data, while performance estimates are derived from detailed studies conducted by EPRI at utility host sites. The cost estimates reflect project commercial operation dates in 2035 and assume multiple commercial deployments to achieve nth-of-a-kind cost reductions.

The purpose of this report and associated TAGWeb® cases is to provide the electric industry with cost and performance estimates of LDES based on consistent methodology. By offering these estimates, this analysis aims to enhance decision-making regarding the integration of LDES technologies into future energy systems.
