Impact of Uncertain Hydrogen Technology Futures on Long-Term Electric Company Investment Portfolios

Recent advances in the development of hydrogen for power generation have spurred interest in using this technology to support electric company portfolio decarbonization. However, uncertainties related to the potential costs of fuel and capital, commercialization timelines of both hydrogen-enabled turbines and supporting infrastructure, and availability of delivered hydrogen fuel for the power sector can impact the level of confidence electric companies have when incorporating hydrogen into their resource plans. This study uses replicable techniques in a commercial capacity expansion tool to understand the impacts of these uncertainties on system costs and investment choices.
