The deployment and operation of emerging technologies in the energy transition may be standalone energy sources or integrated with other established energy supply pathways. For emerging technologies, it is critical to facilitate economical and broad deployment to help reduce the timeline between first-of-a-kind demonstration/deployment and large-scale operation. This emphasizes the importance of available objective assessments for established and emerging generation technologies to inform energy transition strategies.
This document provides an overview of select energy assets that may play an integral role along the various transition pathways leading towards a decarbonized energy future. Each asset ‘card’ summarizes the state-of-the-technology, outlines opportunities and challenges for large-scale dispatchable deployment, assesses the relative benefits of the assets for comparison with others, and provides insights on the potential for deployment at scale. These asset overviews provide a valuable reference tool for senior utility management and key industry stakeholders to inform the decision-making process for future deployment options in support of the energy transition.
