Special Topics in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Accounting for Electric Companies and Combined Utilities

Electric companies report their direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from power generation to federal agencies and agencies in states that have adopted GHG emission reduction policies, including California (CA), Washington (WA) and 12 states in the northeast Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

In recent years, many electric companies also have adopted ambitious voluntary commitments to reduce their GHG emissions and even to achieve “net zero” near mid-century. To track progress towards achieving these goals internally and to voluntarily disclose progress to external organizations, such as the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) and Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi), companies need to understand how their activities may impact the accounting and reporting of their corporate GHG emissions.
