Wide-Area Distribution Assessments for Integrated Strategic System Planning

Distribution planners who typically focus on tactical, near-term assessments are taking on more responsibility in strategic planning. An evolving toolset for these modern strategic planning studies is known as wide-area distribution assessment (WADA). These WADA studies focus on breadth to capture big picture impacts and benefits on the entire distribution grid (or a portion of it) stemming from grid modernization, electrification, and decarbonization. At the same time, these tools must derive implications to the depth of the grid edge. This deliverable introduces how wide-area distribution assessments can be used to support integrated strategic system planning by going beyond traditional planning to study impacts and benefits on the entire distribution grid over a long range in time.
