Technology Deployment Timelines: Project Development

Electric companies require a clearer understanding of timelines for technological commercialization and project development to inform the establishment of time-bound carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas reduction goals and long-range integrated resource plans, as well as other strategic endeavors. Using insights from the literature and EPRI expert perspectives, this report highlights key project development activities and considerations, as well as notional estimates of project development duration for a wide range of energy technologies and enabling infrastructure. This report may serve as an abbreviated but instructive reference for electric company resource planning staff and other stakeholders to help inform strategic decision-making and energy project execution. The findings underscore the variation in technology deployment timelines (from commercialization through project development) across technologies and even within a single technology group, as well as the significance of accounting for the project development duration of enabling infrastructure for power projects. This report is accompanied by Technology Deployment Timelines: Technology Descriptions and Progress (3002026598), which discusses fundamental characteristics and the commercial status of the same technologies featured in this report.
