Understanding characteristics of net-zero emissions systems is important, given the increasing number of national, subnational, and company net-zero targets. Emerging studies look at how to reach these goals, but differences across countries, models, and assumptions make comparisons challenging. This article highlights robust insights to date, uncertainties moving forward, and analysis needs. Pathways for deep decarbonization share many common traits, but the comparisons presented in the article illustrate how the relative mix of approaches and region-specific implementation strategies can be quite diverse due to different regional circumstances and modeling assumptions.
