In the U.S., the fraction of electricity produced by renewable energy generators has doubled since 2010. Wind and solar PV capacity accounted for the majority of this growth. Globally there is more than 2,300 GW of renewable energy capacity, which produces more than one fourth of all electricity. This article reviews the drivers behind renewable energy deployment to date, and reviews strategies to integrate renewables on the grid.
