EPRI’s Residential Heat Pump Water Heater Calculator allows users to evaluate lifecycle costs and environmental benefits of HPWHs versus their fossil fuel and electric resistance counterparts. These metrics are determined based on multiple inputs including climate zone, capital and installation costs, energy prices, local electric emissions factors, and other considerations such as rebates and electrical upgrades. Default values are estimated based on research conducted by EPRI subject matter experts, as well as relevant resources from the U.S. Department of Energy and related organizations. These values can be modified by the user to allow results to be tailored to a specific location or customer.

Benefits and Values
This calculator helps users evaluate electric and fossil-fuel based equipment and determine the cost-effectiveness of each solution. With the calculator, users can compute the following:
- Lifecyle Costs – Evaluation of costs incurred over the life of the equipment including capital costs, installation costs, and energy costs.
- Payback – Number of years required for HPWH to reach cost parity with the alternatives.
- Emissions Savings – Net CO2 emissions impacts over the life of the equipment.
