This report is meant to be a companion report to Synchronous Condenser Cost and Performance Study: 2021 Update(3002020357). Synchronous condensers are electrical machines that provide and absorb reactive power. They are a mature technology that is gaining renewed interest as an effective way to maintain grid stability. The benefits of a synchronous condenser to the power system, such as the provision of short-circuit current, inertia, dynamic reactive power, and bus voltage control, are widely recognized. This research provides technology use case examples and results from transmission system modeling case studies that investigate voltage support, renewable integration, and inertial support. The study also discusses other potential dynamic reactive power resources and provides comparisons in terms of performance and high-level costs. The insights presented in this report can help support renewable energy development strategy in consideration of key system characteristics, including provision of inertia, generation asset repurposing and recovery, and cost-effective system stability.
