This document provides an overview and status update of EPRI’s Board of Directors’ Initiative on Integrated Strategic System Planning (ISSP). It highlights the Initiative's background, current progress, and next steps for 2022. Increasing deployment of variable renewable energy, distributed energy resources, and energy storage in the context of decarbonizing energy systems have created new challenges and opportunities for electric power systems planners. The ISSP initiative develops an integrated framework for modeling generation, transmission, and distribution systems and developing more holistic, cost-effective resource portfolios. The initiative seeks to provide a state-of-the-art modeling framework and associated toolset to assess resource investment strategies that explicitly consider a wide range of planning objectives.
