EPRI’s Transport Refrigeration Unit Calculator allows users to evaluate lifecycle costs and environmental benefits of electric transport refrigeration units (eTRUs) versus their fossil fuel counterparts. These metrics are determined based on multiple inputs including application, annual operating hours, capital and installation costs, energy prices, operation and maintenance costs, and local electric emissions factors. Default values are estimated based on research conducted by EPRI subject matter experts, as well as relevant resources from the U.S. Department of Energy and related organizations. These values can be modified by the user to allow results to be tailored to a specific location or customer.

Benefits and Value
This calculator helps users evaluate electric and fossil-fuel based equipment and determine the cost-effectiveness of each solution. With the calculator, users can compute the following:
- Lifecyle Costs – Evaluation of costs incurred over the life of the equipment including capital costs, installation costs, energy costs, and operation and maintenance costs.
- Payback – Number of years required for electric to reach cost parity with the alternatives.
- Emissions Savings – Net CO2, NOX, and SOX emissions impacts over the life of the equipment.
