PRE-SW: Transmission Infrastructure Cost and Performance Estimating Tool v1.0 Beta

Transmission infrastructure cost estimating with a lack of clear project definition and conceptual design information is a difficult but necessary task as it relates to long-term planning activities.  Due to the lack of readily available public information in infrastructure costs which factor in geographical, environmental and design basis variables some level of preliminary design must commonly be performed to achieve estimates which can inform long-term planning and associated decision making. This tool allows for users to estimate costs of transmission infrastructure projects based on the findings of EPRI Report Transmission Infrastructure Cost Estimating Guide: 2021 Update (3002020640).

Benefits and Values

  • Transmission infrastructure costs consistently evolve over time as a result of general market fluctuations. In addition, technology advances in the marketplace influence the equipment that is available, including the inherent electrical ratings.
  • Transmission infrastructure costs and performance are influenced by many site factors as a result of the linear nature of projects. As such, estimates for infrastructure must consider site variability, labor markets, and the technology that is being deployed.
  • Technology selection is driven by constraints that often lack appropriate documentation and are consistently evolving as the underlying components that influences equipment performance is undergoing continual evolution.
