Exploring the Future Role of Natural Gas in Long-Term Electric Sector Decarbonization

Many utilities have extensive natural-gas-fired power generation capacity with potential new builds on the horizon, but there are questions about the near- and long-term roles for natural gas in the electric sector as deep greenhouse gas emissions reductions are pursued. This analysis uses EPRI’s U.S. Economy, Greenhouse Gas, and Energy (REGEN) model to explore how technology and policy assumptions impact the potential roles for natural gas capacity and generation. Results using REGEN indicate that the extent of natural gas power generation in electric sector decarbonization portfolios depends on policy, technology, and market uncertainties and exhibits high regional variation.
