This report describes a qualitative assessment of the impacts of the changing resource mix, energy efficiency, and electrification, among other factors, on the transmission system in the state of Pennsylvania for Task 2 of the EPRI Efficient Electrification State Study for Pennsylvania. It is based on earlier results from Task 1 about economic and resource planning, with an accounting of its interactions with the neighboring regions. The following analysis of transmission system impacts is divided into the categories of planning, operations, and economic dispatch. The project team reviewed the drivers of future change, identified considerations relevant to transmission, and identified and discussed potential transmission impacts. This report documents the current system status and operational challenges, the historical and possible changes to load and resource mix resulting from U.S. Regional Economy, Greenhouse Gas, and Energy (US-REGEN) scenario analyses, the decision points in planning, operations, and markets, the significant electrification impacts on these decision points, and finally, opportunities to enhance safety, reliability, and resiliency, subject to possible electrification impacts.
