2018 REGEN Scenarios Analysis: Understanding Key Factors that May Impact the Evolution of Electricity Generation in the United States 2015-2050

For each of the past six years, EPRI’s Project Set 178B, Integrated Energy System Planning and Market Analysis, in conjunction with member electric companies, has developed different scenarios of potential future technology, regulatory, and market conditions that may exist in the United States in the coming decades. The team then analyzed how the United States electric sector might evolve under these scenarios. This report, along with the accompanying slide presentation and Excel spreadsheet data set, highlights the analysis conducted and results from the 2018 REGEN Scenarios Analysis Project. In 2018, the team analyzed how the U.S. electric power generation mix may evolve from 2015 to 2050 under 13 different scenarios. These scenarios explored the potential impacts of key uncertainties, including future natural gas prices, electrification and energy efficiency, more stringent renewable portfolio standards, policies requiring different levels and timing of required carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions, and deployment of electricity storage technology.
