Technical Assessment Guide (TAG) for Power Generation and Storage Technology Options: 2015 Topics

This Technical Assessment Guide (TAG®) document was funded by the sponsors of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Programs 178 and 178A, as well as TAGWeb® database supplemental funders, to provide cost and performance estimates of selected power generation and energy storage technologies. The goal is to help funders make technology-related investment decisions that are consistent with their long-term business goals. The annual update reflects market trends for various technologies and interests of program advisors. Only selected technologies are updated each year.

The information is based on technology improvements, regulatory directives, and market factors that influence generation planning and implementation. The data provided are also incorporated into the TAGWeb database to facilitate preliminary screening for power generation and storage technologies. Funders can customize project cost estimates by adjusting state labor rates, technical performance information, and key cost component information. In addition, they can conduct sensitivity analyses of cost estimates, generate comparison reports, and export tables and plots. The topics addressed in this report include the following:

  • Power generation and storage technology options
  • Combined cycle plants with and without carbon capture
  • Small modular reactor plants
  • Fuel cell technologies
  • Aeroderivative gas turbines
  • Risks, regulations, cost escalation, and market impacts
  • Distributed energy resources planning
  • Renewable energy asset acquisition planning
  • Current power generation trends
  • True cost of wind power

The information is useful in developing simplified or preliminary cost and performance estimates of various power supply options or alternatives.
