With growing climate change concerns, achieving decarbonization is becoming a global energy priority. At the forefront of this discourse is the electricity sector, a pivotal player in achieving low-carbon energy systems. This survey delves into the diverse approaches employed in electricity resource planning across eight different countries, aiming to understand how strategic decisions are being shaped to support decarbonization.
The objective of this project is to review the electricity resource planning approaches of a select set of countries and regions worldwide and their decarbonization plans. Nine countries were chosen from three different clusters, based on their energy use, energy growth, and energy transition levels. The resource plans were evaluated based on a series of questions grouped by four pillars: commitment, workflow and collaboration, data and methods, and reporting. This structured evaluation form of the survey was used to develop a brief guide, aimed at identifying current practices in resource planning across the four pillars.
By analyzing various planning approaches through this framework and distilling key insights, the survey contributes to the ongoing dialogue on achieving decarbonization and provides a guide with current practices for planners and policymakers. This guide is intended to help practitioners identify current practices in resource planning globally, as potential solutions to achieving decarbonization.
