In December 2020, the Electric Power Research Institute published report 3002016370, 2020 Solar Technology Status, Cost, and Performance, an update of an annual report providing detailed cost and performance information for solar photovoltaic plants. The solar industry continues to see emerging technology developments, evolving plant designs and operations and maintenance practices, changing tax incentives and tariffs, and ongoing decreases in equipment and total plant costs. The Renewables Economics research area continues to monitor this dynamic industry to understand its current state and where it might be headed through its annual cost and performance studies and ongoing market analysis. This Renewables Insight evaluates trends observed over the solar technology, cost, and performance annual reports between 2016 and 2020, as well as insights from new cost breakdowns that were included in the 2020 report.
