Electric companies are actively considering how the future climate will affect physical assets and operations. In this white paper, we conduct a literature review to better understand the landscape of published guidance for assessing physical climate risks and adapting to potential climate change impacts that is available to electric power companies. This review finds that guidance developed specifically for the electric power sector is currently limited, and that more generalized guidance for climate risk assessment is also sparse. Looking beyond these documents designed to provide guidance, a broad array of related climate risk publications, including state or company climate change assessments, climate awareness documents, and peripheral climate transition documents, could be used by electric companies to inform the physical climate risk assessment process. Overall, these documents come from a wide range of sources including federal and state government, regulators, electricity sector stakeholders, and other institutions including universities and disclosure organizations. External research organizations can play an important role in providing needed experience and expertise on climate scenarios and projection data, facilitating electric companies as they conduct climate assessments and develop adaptation plans.
